Luckily, the Internet Archive houses a collection of Classic TV Commercials, with almost 17,000 different advertisements dating back to 1949. Ranging from the expected (cars, food, beauty products) all the way to the bizarre (innovative mops and vitamins for baldness —you read that right), we've compiled a small sampling of the treasures in this collection and have highlighted them for your enjoyment below: Just For Kids As a kid growing up in the 20th century, it was normal to ask your parents for the newest toys or sugary cereal advertised during Saturday morning cartoons. You might remember coveting the newest Barbie doll—making her commercial debut in 1959—or wanting a big bowl of Kellogg's Sugar Frosted Flakes, as shown in this 1976 ad. Children were even marketed vitamins, convincing them to choose Flintstones Vitamins over generic brands. VIEW THE COLLECTION Adverts Across Many Languages The Internet Archive's Classic TV Commercials is a treasure trove of international ads in over 20 languages. Take a look through a series of Italian Furby commercials or enjoy thrilling Japanese ads from the 90s, such as this one for Ultraman Toys. The collection is extensive, dating back to the 1950s and features finds like this Spanish ad for Colgate soap from 1956, shot on 16mm film. EXPLORE FURTHER But Wait! There's More! TV infomercials have been a staple of TV advertising for decades—promoting obscure products like Headstart Vitamins (pills specifically for aiding hair growth) since the 60s and 70s. Many of these products promise life-changing discoveries, like the Bodyssage full body massager that guarantees healed aches and pains. Meanwhile, a good deal of infomercials require an entire TV episode's length of time (30 minutes or more) to convince viewers of the product's value to everyday life, as seen with the H2O Mop, the self-proclaimed "world's ultimate cleaning solution."
